Before And After

Few days ago my brother was showing me some old family photos. While he was flipping through them I stopped him when I saw a photo that shocked me. It was a photo of me three years ago. The first thing that came out of my mouth when I saw it was “I used to look like that?!”. I think you know what I am talking about. It was a photo of me before I lost the weight.

Back then when I was obese I didn’t like my picture taken. After I lost the weight I was confident enough to pose to cameras. I bought a camera on my 20th birthday and I took plenty of photos, but in all of them I was in a healthy shape. I got used to my body like that and that’s why I was shocked when I saw the obese me in that old photo.

Seeing myself changed a lot, inside and outside, after I lost weight made me feel proud that I made the decision of living a healthy life. It was also a reminder of how I used to look and feel back then, and a motivation to keep moving forward and not fall back to the old unhealthy habits. So to all of you who wants to start this journey I suggest you take before and after photos. Being able to see your progress in front of you will push you further towards your weight loss goal.

On Loving Your Body

Yesterday I went shopping (which I usually do once in a year) and bought three colourful floral blouses and a nice pair of blue skinny denims. I picked them with the same sizes I used to wear last year. When I went home and tried them on, nothing was fitting. Yes, not a single item out of the four was my size! I gained weight, that I know. But I guess I was in denial.

I gained about 5 kilos (11 lbs) since last year. It was a slow and subtle process. I would gain a kilo and notice it, then I’d quickly lose it again. I was in control of my weight until four months ago. During that period there was a gradual weight gain and no effort for losing it. Although most people didn’t seem to notice the change in my weight, it showed in clothes size.

I was pretty upset yesterday after trying the clothes on, I even cried. But after the feelings of sadness, anger, and disappointment faded away, I was happy to learn that these emotions weren’t out of hate towards my body. I was rather angry at myself that I don’t take care of my body and my health the way I used to. I was disappointed that I let myself go back to the old unhealthy habits. But, I didn’t feel like I hate my body although it’s not as thin as it used to be.

That’s the kind of mentality that I was trying to develop in my weight loss journey. Our bodies aren’t our enemies, they are ours. We have to stop bashing our bodies in front of the mirror. We have to love them and nourish them in order to become healthy and happy.

Annoying Things I Heard During And After Weight Loss

If you’ve recently lost weight or you’re currently losing weight, you’ll know what I am talking about. But if you’re at the start of your weight loss journey, this post will prepare you for some irritating comments you might hear.

During weight loss:
1) Is this really how you’ll lose weight?
Well this one is said in a sarcastic uncertain way. They just won’t believe, or more like accept, that losing weight only requires changing your eating habits and exercising.
2) A bite of this will not hurt!
Although it might not exactly hurt, but a bite can unconsciously lead to other bites. Also, a bite from this and a bite from that are added calories.
3) Are you really gonna eat that? Or Are you supposed to be eating this?
I am trying not to swear here, but did someone give them a diet police badge?? No one has the right to ask you what you’re about to eat or why you chose to, especially when you’re the one who’s been eating healthy. If you decided to have a cheesecake, then do it! It’s not like you’re ‘dieting’ or depriving yourself from food. You’re eating healthy, but it’s okay to have your favorite dessert every once in a while.
4) Don’t you think you’re overdoing this?
This has been said in response to “I don’t eat processed sugar”. I am not “overdoing” anything, because simply it’s not something that is being done, it’s a lifestyle. I chose not to incorporate processed sugar in my diet just like you chose to overload your body with high fructose corn syrup, but do you see me complaining? Beside that there is something called fructose in fruits that I can eat to get the sugar I need.
5) How much are you planning to lose?
This is annoying when my answer is followed by “don’t you think it’s a lot? I mean you don’t wanna end up looking like a skeleton, right?”. I seriously have nothing to say but “It’s my body and I know how much I should lose and when I should stop.” This has been said to everyone who asked me that freaking question.
6) I can’t lose weight no matter how hard I try *followed by more whining*
Listen, there are two scenarios here: 1) you have a problem in your body, something to do with your metabolism or thyroid for example. 2) you have a perfectly normal body but you don’t have the will to do it. Either way it’s not my problem. You can visit a doctor or a nutritionist if you’re case 1, or find the motivation you need if you’re case 2. I don’t have to sit and listen to your pessimistic view on weight loss, because I am working my a** off here trying to accomplish something. If you want my advice I’ll be more than glad to help, but if you’re here just to dispirit me then goodbye.

After weight loss:
1) So, are you going to start eating normal again?
I don’t even…never mind! Seriously? It. Is. A. Lifestyle. I am not ‘dieting’ for God’s sake! I AM NOT DIETING!! There’s no going back. Unless of course I want to gain the weight back!
Please tell me you’re not planning to lose more!
Please shut up!
3) You look good now, don’t lose more.
I am not sure whether this means I actually look good, or it means ‘we don’t want you to lose more because you make us feel fat’. I’ve been told this when I lost 5 kgs, when I lost 10 kgs, and when I lost 15 kgs. So I am not sure they’re being honest with me. I am a girl, and I know how girls are. It’s very common when a woman or a girl loses weight her peers will start telling her to not lose more.
4) Oh my God! You shrank!!
I’ve been told by one of my friends “you didn’t lose weight, you look like you were sucked in!” This was supposed to be a joke. Ba dum tsh! The reason why I look a lot smaller now is because I have a naturally small body frame, not because I’ve lost too much weight. In fact, I still need to lose 8 kgs to reach my goal.
5) Are you ill?
This one really takes the cake! Some people, who haven’t seen me in a while, actually asked me if I was sick. I don’t get. I mean people are supposed to look better after losing weight. People think I look pale now, but it’s because my skin cleared after I started to eat healthy and my facial features became more apparent. It’s not my problem I have a naturally very white skin. Blame my genes!

How I lost The Weight

I’ve already shared with you the reasons for why I decided to lose weight and the things you should know before losing weight. Now it’s time to tell you how I did it.

As I said before, it’s very important for you to educate yourself before you start this journey. So basically the first thing I did was reading articles, blog posts, weight-loss success stories, and other things related to nutrition and fitness before I started doing any change. After that I had a base to start with. I kept building my knowledge throughout the journey.

What exactly do you have to read? You have to read about food and the basics of nutrition. Like how your body works when it takes food in, and how the food you eat affects your body, what are nutrients, how important each one is, how to eat a balanced diet…etc. You also have to understand what calories are, how much you need of them, and how much you should burn.
Another topic is fitness. You need to read about exercising and how it affects your body, read about the different kind of exercises, read about muscles and fats and the difference between them…etc.

Next thing you need to do is to be honest with yourself and prepare mentally for the lifestyle change. Sit alone and say, or write down, the reasons why you really want to lose weight. When you know your reasons very well and prepare your mind for it, you’ll be ready to apply your knowledge of health and wellness in your everyday life. Being psychologically prepared and accepting your new lifestyle are very vital for weight loss success. Because if you don’t have enough willpower for it then trust me, no one and I mean NO one in this world can make you lose weight. On the other hand, if you are determined to do it, then no person or thing can stop you from reaching your goal.

Weight loss is not magic. It’s really simple. You need to change your eating habits and start exercising. I know it’s been said so many times, but that’s because it’s the only way. You know why some people fail in losing weight? In my opinion (and from my observation of few people I know) it’s because they are not willing to educate themselves about it, and are not willing to give it all their best. They want to lose weight as fast as they can so they become thin. And they usually think of the process as a burden or as a deprivation from the joys of life. Pretty shallow and immature, right? What I want you to know is that it’s NOT impossible and it IS simple just if you decided so.

What I did after educating myself and preparing mentally was taking certain steps to change my lifestyle. First thing is my diet. These are the changes I made:
– Reducing portion sizes
– Quitting soft drinks
– Controlling dessert intake
– Replacing fried food with grilled, boiled, or raw food
– Stop eating highly-processed food as much as possible
– No eating when not hungry
– Stop eating when full
– Consuming the required amount of calories
– Snacking on healthy food
– Try to have 6 small meals instead of 3 big ones (not always possible for me)
– Adding more fruits and vegetables to my diet
– Drinking more water
– Replacing sugary juices and other drinks with unsweetened tea, coffee, and natural herbs
There are other changes you can make, and of course you can discuss it with a nutritionist as they would guide you to how to maintain a healthy balanced diet.

Second thing is exercising. You need to exercise in order to burn calories and lose weight. It is also important for your muscles and keeping your bones and joints strong. In addition that it’s necessary for your heart’s health. I started exercising at home. I bought a stepper, jumping rope, exercising mat (or whatever it’s called), dumbbells, and worked out. I’d do step aerobics 3 times a week, other cardio exercises 2 times a week, and strength training 2 times a week. You can choose the exercising routine that suits you. You can go to the gym of course and get a personal trainer to help you. Whatever the exercise is, the idea is to move. You may enjoy walking, or swimming, or basketball, it doesn’t matter. Find the exercise that you like and do it.

So you see, this is how it happened. It’s simple, isn’t it? It’s not easy for sure, but it’s gonna be worth it! And to everyone who can’t afford a nutritionist or a gym membership, guess what? I did it without a nutritionist or a personal trainer or a gym membership or even a treadmill at home! That’s why I told you that if you really want to do it, nothing can stop you. I lost 19 kilos (about 42 lbs) so far and still have some kilos to lose to reach my weight loss goal.  I did gain some weight back (4 kilos), because I’ve let stress sabotage my health, which I am going to talk about in a later post. Anyway, I am back on track and hopefully will continue to lose weight and live a healthy life.

Losing weight is a really good journey that you will enjoy and learn a lot from, so don’t look for a quick fix and deprive yourself from this experience. Find your strength and your motivation and you will be invincible. So what are you waiting for? You CAN do it!!

12 Things You Need To Know Before Losing Weight

So, as I lost 19 kgs (about 42 lbs) I’d like to share my weight loss journey with you. I made a new category ‘Health & weight loss’ where I’m going to write about it, and I hope it will inspire those who want to lose weight. But first, before I tell you my story I want to hit you with the truth about weight loss.

If you decided that you want to lose weight and now you’re preparing for the journey, here are 12 things you need to know before starting.

  1. It IS a journey. The road is definitely going to be bumpy, but it won’t matter when you finally reach your destination. While keeping your eyes on the road, do not forget to enjoy the ride itself. There is no point of doing all this when you are not willing to enjoy or learn things from this experience. And there will be a lot of roadside attractions that will make you want to stop, but don’t fall for it.
  2. It IS hard. Yes! Losing weight IS hard. If someone tells you otherwise, they’re either lying so you won’t be turned off or they don’t know what they’re talking about. But don’t look for shortcuts just because it’s hard. Let determination and persistence be your fuel.
  3. You might not find support. Of course you will be lucky if your friends or family or anyone else supported you in this journey. But trust me, even if you didn’t find the support that you expected, you can still do it alone! And don’t be surprised when you get discouragements instead of support. You might return home to find your family gorging on pizza or your co-worker put a chocolate-chip muffin on your desk again, and they might be doing it to see how long you can resist temptations. Don’t let this stop you. Blow them away!
  4. It’s not about being thin, it about being healthy. If your goal is to fit in a dress for an upcoming party then you might not last long in this journey. Your destination should be a healthy fit body, not a skinny body!  This is a strong motivation that will keep you going no matter how rough the road is.
  5. There is only one right way to do it. Exercising and eating healthy. Voila! Fad diets, pills, surgeries, or any other means of ‘fast easy’ ways to lose weight will NOT work. Yeah I know that someone you know tried the latest detox diet and lost 20 lbs in a week or whatever, but did they keep it off? I bet they gained it all back, if not more! Are you looking for a short fix here? No you’re looking for a lifetime change.
  6. It is really a life style. I know you’ve heard that thousand times before, but it is true. Tony Robbins said “If you always do what you’ve always done, you will always get what you’ve always got”. If you are not willing to change then do not expect to achieve something worthy. So do NOT diet, eat healthy! People who go with the mentality of ‘dieting’ will definitely gain the weight back.
  7. Do not stop cold turkey. As I said before you are changing your eating habits and not dieting. So do not deprive yourself from your favorite food or you might go crazy. I made the mistake of not eating anything, and I mean ANYTHING that was basically a dessert. This is wrong because you will eventually start craving it and then end up binging. Instead of quitting cold turkey, take baby steps into reducing the servings of desserts (for example) you have per week.
  8. Weight loss isn’t a magic pill that will solve your problems. Do not expect that all your life problems will disappear when you lose weight. Of course a lot of problems will, but not all of them. You will be healthier which means your high blood pressure will decrease your cholesterol levels too, you will no more have headaches in the morning, you will have better sleep, better quality of life…etc. but do not expect to get married just because you lost the weight, or get the job you wanted just because you did so (unless that job is a personal trainer of course). This means that you shouldn’t be doing this for anything else but yourself. Let being healthy and feeling good about yourself be the sole purpose of weight loss.
  9. Weight loss has its own problems. So it’s not just that it won’t solve all your problems, but it might even add more to the pile. How? You might start having body image issues, or start obsessing about calories, or even develop anxiety because of it. Also there are times when you might hit a weight loss plateau or lose motivation. I am not trying to scare you, I just want you to be prepared psychologically for this. And I am not saying that you WILL face these problems, I am just saying that you might.
  10. People be mean, people be nice! You will notice after losing weight how people will start to treat you differently. Those people who were against the idea at the beginning will probably start cheering you on by now. It’s not as nice as you might imagine. It actually sucks! This just shows how shallow people are. I gotta admit that when I lost weight and people around me changed the way they think of me I was happy at first, but then I was angry. Why should they assume that I am a better person now since I am thinner? I am almost the same person, but they decided to give me a chance just because I look different now? Smh!
  11. You gotta get used to numbers. Are you good at Math? Don’t worry, you don’t need to be a genius to do this. Weight loss involves simple but effective calculations. The basic equation is: burn more calories than you consume. Of course that involves calculating your BMR, your caloric intake, the calories burnt during exercise…etc in order to be able to know how much you can lose per week. I suggest you keep a journal where you record all that along with your weekly progress. It will help you to stay on track and know where you went wrong if you’re not losing weight or gaining some back.
  12. You need to do your homework. As I said at the beginning this is a journey. So if you are planning for a trip to somewhere new, will you just take your car and go? Of course not! You have to prepare first. You search on the internet about your destination, you try to find the best way to get there, you ask people who have gone there before, you pack the things you need to take with you, and all those preparations. It’s the same thing for weight loss. You have to gather as much information as you can, ask others for advice, read success stories, read about health, fitness, nutrition, well-being, and do all that you need in order to be armed with knowledge enough to successfully kick start this journey.

I know that some of the points I’ve stated might have surprised you, but I don’t want you to be discouraged. You have to accept the truth and work hard to get what you want.
